Panchagavya (pancha — five; gavya — that which belongs to the cow) refers to the five products of the native breed cow: gomaya (cow dung), gomutra (cow urine), ksheera (milk), gritha (ghee) and dadhi/takra (curds & buttermilk). Chikitsa means treatment.
Panchagavya Chikitsa is a system of treatment in which medicines are prepared using these five cow products together with relevant herbs. The five products represent the Panchamahabhutas:
- Akasha / Space — buttermilk (takra)
- Vayu / Air — gomutra (cow urine)
- Jala / Water — ksheera (milk)
- Agni / Fire — gritha (ghee)
- Prithvi / Earth — gomaya (cow dung)
The panchabhautik imbalance in an individual is identified and equilibrium is restored through medicine prepared using Panchagavya.
