Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutra Sthana (Ch. 5) describes buttermilk as beneficial in sopha (oedema), arsha (haemorrhoids), grahani (malabsorption syndrome), mutragraha (urine retention), udara (ascites) and aruchi (anorexia).
